2nd graders listened to the story Architecture for Beginners by Tim Newlin, which provided many examples of the different types of rooms you might find in a house. Afterwards students started to draw their houses by using a rectangular floor sample to trace and design either a tall house or a wide house. They added elements outside their home, like a mailbox, a tree, or flowers. Then students drew furniture for each of the rooms inside their house and were encouraged to add lots of details by including objects such as dishes, towels, books, or even toys.
